    April 23, 2022

In 2020, the 102.5-ton "Colossus of Hüven", as it has been called since May 2021, with a circumference of 15.4 meters was uncovered from a field near Hüven and salvaged with great effort. Now this giant, which is considered to be one of the largest boulders in Lower Saxony, adorns the Schützenplatz, which was redesigned around it for 120,000 euros as natural monument number 73 in the Emsland district. This gives the chunk special protection: from now on it may no longer be damaged or sprayed. The transport and installation in the village of 570 had previously cost 35,000 euros. In view of the various large stone tombs on the Hümmling, a visit to this imposing megalith is worthwhile, especially since the unusual and well-restored Hüvener Mühle is nearby, which should not be missed on this occasion.
Experts from the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology estimate the age of the stone at one billion years. During the Saale glacial period, the huge chunk was probably pushed towards Hümmling in a glacier. This makes the colossus from Hüven the third largest "found" stone in Lower Saxony after Stöckste near Nienbuerg (330 tons) and number 2 in Dietrichsfeld near Aurich (110 tons).
