Now comes Mary, my Mother of God. Oh, it's beautiful! And now she's taking my hands. ”These are said to have been the last words of the carpenter Xaver Hiermeyer on his deathbed in 1944. Unemployed in the early winter of 1931, he dug up the Madonna from Spindeltal, which was hidden there more than two meters under the remains of the ruined church for almost 400 years.

In 1542, Count Palatine Ottheinrich of Neuburg had the chapel profaned, church furniture removed and the roof removed. This meant the end of the Marian pilgrimage. In 1984 a wooden cross was erected in the ruins on a private initiative and soon afterwards a picture of the Madonna was attached again. Pilgrims came regularly from 1985 and the ruined church was partially rebuilt and provided with a protective roof, despite concerns of the monument protection, then windows and doors were installed and benches were set up.
