Magnificent baroque building, today the seat of the Higher Regional Court.

The former ducal residence is now used as a building for the Palatinate Higher Regional Court. It is located in the middle of the city of Zweibrücken.

Between 1720 and 1725, Duke Gustav Samuel Leopold had the ducal palace built in its late baroque form according to the plans of the Swedish master builder Jonas Erikson Sundahl. The ducal palace experienced its heyday between 1735 and 1775 under Duke Christian IV. Famous artists were guests, such as the composer Christoph Willibald von Gluck. Maximilian I, the Duke's nephew and later King of Bavaria, also spent part of his childhood in the castle.

In 1793, Zweibrücken was occupied by French revolutionary troops and the castle was destroyed.

The ducal castle in Zweibrücken is one of the largest and most magnificent secular baroque buildings in Rhineland-Palatinate. It was built between 1720 and 1725 by the Swedish architect Jonas Erikson Sundahl (1678-1762) as the new princely seat of the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. During the Second World War (1939-1945) the castle was badly damaged, rebuilt in a three-year construction phase according to Sundahl's original plans and opened in 1965. Since then the castle has housed the Palatinate Higher Regional Court and the Attorney General's Office.
