The giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) or mountain sequoia is the only living representative of the genus Sequoiadendron from the swamp cypress family (Taxodiaceae). It is native to the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, where it is known as "Giant Redwood". It can be found at altitudes of up to 2,500 meters. Since the middle of the 19th century, the sequoia has also been back in Central Europe, where it was already native before the Ice Age. There it was used as a park and landscape tree as well as in experimental cultivations for forestry. In its natural distribution area, however, the sequoia is threatened with extinction and is under nature protection.
