Possibly built some time around 950, St Bega's Church is a gorgeous building on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. It was renovated at some point in the mid-nineteenth century.
Bega was an Irish Chieftain's daughter who fled to Cumbria to escape an arranged marriage. She made he way from St Bees, possibly via Bassenthwaite to Northumbria.
The church is the end point for the long-distance walk St Bega's Way and start point for its sequel: St Bega's Way Back.
