The Alpbach flows through the city Tegernsee in the Tegernsee. It rises at the Kreuzberg saddle below the Kreuzberg and is in most places not deeper than 20 cm. In the upper course of the stream, there are many Gumpen. In the lower course of the stream the Alpbach is straightened and canalized.

Quellbach des Alpbachs is the so-called Oberalpbach. The Alpbach runs over much of its length in the Alpbachtal. He has a number of side streams. Among the most important include the Erzgraben, the Rißbach, the Katzenbach and the Kohlhaufgraben (all right-hand feeders - the largest of the smaller left feeders is the udder moat).

Over most of its length, a forest road runs parallel to the stream. In Alpbachtal between forest road and Alpbach is also the Alpbach Alm.
