A very nice explanation, and in the background it clearly shows what "hat book" is all about. Beeches used to be planted in pig meadows so that the pigs could feed on the beechnuts and stay together. Some of these trees have also been nibbled, which means that they usually have deep-set crowns. In this small piece of forest you can see beeches that used to be hat beeches. 2 copies stand out there very much. These are likely to have been planted around 1835.
