D'r Joep is the Dutch national miners' monument. It has stood on the market in the center of Kerkrade since 1957.
At the unveiling on June 16, 1957, Frans Houben, Governor of Limburg, made the declaration: "Doa sjteet d'r Joep, Inne real köaler" (There is our Joep, a real miner). The statue's unveiling was included in this year's Polygoon news. D'r Joep is sung on his Kerkraads in the carnival song "On her Measure sjteet d'r Joepemaan and what on Vasteloavend...".
