A legend tells: At the time of the French Revolutionary wars (18th / 19th century) French soldiers camped here under Colonel Chavél. Since he was unbearably strict, one day his soldiers tore him from his horse and murdered him. Since then, Chavél - in the Wiesloch dialect "Schabel" or "Schawel" - has been riding around restlessly at night without a head. For a long time the cry “Awwel kummt der Schawel” served d. H. “Now comes Chavél”, to shoo disobedient children into bed. - The area here has been called "Schlangengrund" for centuries. For a few years the grass snake (Natrix natrix) has been more common there again. The slopes have terraces that used to carry vines. Fruit trees were planted on it in the early 20th century. The grounds began to run wild even before the Second World War. Around 7,000 snowdrops have been growing here for over 60 years.

Wiesloch Mining Trail | Station 16 | The "Schabels-Kling" is of particular interest because a legend has grown up around this man-made loess hollow path. At the time of the French revolution at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, a French unit is said to have been located there. Their commander, a Colonel Chavèl, was unbearably strict. One day he was murdered by his own soldiers. Since then, the French officer is said to have been riding restlessly and headlessly through the area. Hence the name Schabels-Kling, because in the dialect Colonel is called Schabel or Schavel. The Schabels-Kling is in the serpentine base. There must have been snakes there in the past; today the grass snake can be found there. The win is laid out in terraces, which probably goes back to the early modern era. After vine and fruit growing, the slopes overgrown and are now overgrown with shrubbery and forest.
