How are ravines created in loess areas? If a path leading uphill is used with heavy vehicles, small depressions are formed first. When it rains heavily, these become water drainage channels and drag the earth with them. The path deepens over the years. The sunlit slopes are what makes the ravines so valuable. Only here can animals and plants (some of which have become rare) live, which need warmth and lime-rich, dry soil. This ravine is one of the few of its kind near Wiesloch that is still undisturbed.
