From 1330 onwards, the village of Bernried belonged to the manor of the local Augustinian Canons' Monastery. A parish church was built for the subjects of this manor less than 100 meters southwest of the existing St. Martin's Church. This building, consecrated in 1382, forms the core of the present church. The facade tower with its onion dome was built in 1530. In 1672, a pilgrimage chapel, the so-called "Gruftkapelle" (Crypt Chapel), was added to the north.[1] In 1693, the church was remodeled in the Baroque style, probably by Caspar Feichtmayr the Elder.[1] Baroque altars followed in 1769.[2]

The east-northeast-facing hall church is Gothic in its core and features a recessed polygonal choir. The façade is structured by pilaster strips, which are also contrasting in color.[1]

The side altars were designed by Tassilo Zöpf from Wessobrunn and executed by Paul Zwinck from Uffing. The altarpieces were painted by Franz Seraph Kirzinger. On the left side altar, next to the altarpiece depicting John the Baptist, are sculptures of St. Isidore and St. Notburga in period costume. On the right side altar, the painting of St. George the Holy Helper is flanked by figures of St. Roch and St. Sebastian.
