    Built in 1851 as a country house for Sir James Matheson, Lews Castle is a beautiful Victorian era castle. Matheson bought the whole island with his fortune earned from the Chinese Opium trade.



    During WWII, the castle was used to accommodate troops from the 700 Naval Air Squadron after which it was used as accommodation for Lews Castle College students before being disused for several decades.



    In 2011, the Heritage Lottery Fund gave the castle £4.6 million and it opened a museum and cultural centre. Today, guests can also stay in luxury apartments in the castle. Set amongst manicured parkland, the castle is a lovely place to stop for a picnic. In summer months, the museum is open from 10am - 5pm, closed on Sundays and Thursdays. The cafe is open daily.
