The Groote Gat is a special nature reserve and a cultural-historical pearl in one. Forts that were part of the State Spanish Lines from the Eighty Years' War are still visible here. These forts are located in a varied landscape. The Groote Gat consists of a large creek, surrounded by reed beds, shrubs, hedges, pollard trees and wet grassland. This creates a varied landscape where several rare breeding birds live.
The creek in the Groote Gat was once part of an extensive creek system that was connected to the Zwin. The Groote Gat is a remnant of the Bruges canal. This canal was dug between 1501 and 1505 to prevent the silting up of the Zwin, but the intended effect was not achieved.

But the Groote Gat did acquire a strategic significance in the Eighty Years' War. It was used as part of the Oostburg Line. The water formed the border between the Spanish and the States troops. Entrenchments were built on both sides of the Groote Gat. On one side lay the State fort Kaas-en-Brood. On the other side was the Catelijneschans of the Spaniards. These forts are still very clearly recognizable in the relief.
