British European Airways Flight 609 was a British European Airways charter flight on February 6, 1958 from Belgrade via Munich to Manchester. After the refueling stop in Munich, the plane went off the runway on the third take-off attempt and exploded. Among the passengers of the "Elizabethan" type Airspeed Ambassador G-ALZU ("Lord Burghley") were the football team Manchester United as well as escorts, fans and sports journalists. Of 44 people on board, 23 died and the other 21 were injured. In English-speaking countries, the accident is primarily known as the Munich Air Disaster or Munich Air Crash.
