The gravel ponds were originally created by gravel mining but have developed into ecologically valuable wetlands.

Today, they provide habitat for numerous endangered species – including waterfowl, amphibians, dragonflies, and rare plants. The ponds are nestled in a diverse landscape of alluvial forests, oxbow lakes, reed beds, and flower-rich meadows. Their biodiversity is particularly impressive: over 100 breeding bird species and many migratory birds use the area as a refuge.
