The starting point of the mountain hiking trail is the Wartburg in Eisenach.
The section from the Hohe Sonne to Neuhaus am Rennweg runs on the Rennsteig.
The route continues over the Thuringian Slate Mountains, Vogtland, Ore Mountains, Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, Lusatian Mountains, Jeschken Mountains, Jizera Mountains, Bober-Katzbach Mountains, Glatzer Snow Mountains, Jeseníky Mountains, Beskids, Mala Fatra, Mátra and Bükk to Budapest.
