The current castle dates back to a medieval castle that was built by the Lords of Sandersdorf as Wittelsbach ministerials. The family has been mentioned in documents since the 12th century. The last of this family, Ulrich the Sandersdorfer, was followed in 1372 by the Rindsmaul family, followed in 1382 by Konrad the Kemnater. In 1420 the Forchheimers were in possession of the castle.
