There used to be railway junction here, which was established in 1862: the Border Counties Railway from Hexham connected to Carlisle to Edinburgh line over the moorland between Hawick and Newcastleton. By 1956, the line was too infrequently used and it closed soon after.

Gravel riding

Fascinating place to walk around. When it was a working railway junction for the Border Union (Waverley) and Border Counties railways it was its own little community cut off from the outside world but for the railway. The only way out was by train. There was no road to it until 1963.

Hiking

Junction on the Former Waverley line that ran from Carlisle to Edinburgh. nice easy walking mainly on forest roads.
