In order to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city, the painter Max Liebermann had a summer residence built on the banks of the Großer Wannsee in 1909.

The garden, laid out according to his own ideas, inspired the important representative of German Impressionism to create around 200 paintings. Some of these paintings can be seen today in the Liebermann Villa Museum.

The Villa Langenscheidt is in the old villa colony "Alsen" at Berlin's Wannsee.

The area around the Großer and Kleiner Wannsee between Berlin and Potsdam has been developed since the 1870s as an upper-class villa colony, the "Colonie Alsen".

Wealthy Berliners – including members of the Jewish bourgeoisie – built summer villas here. In addition to the artist Max Liebermann, other prominent families such as the publishers Langenscheidt and Springer also lived here. Religious boundaries do not seem to have played a central role in the Alsen colony. Christian and Jewish Berliners were neighbors who were in close social contact with one another. They even shared the local cemetery.

After the National Socialists took power, Nazi organizations and functionaries moved into many of the villas on Wannsee. In the course of the "Aryanization" Jewish families were forced to sell their villas - mostly below the market value - and emigrated. Others were deported.

The villa is currently part of the water sports club "Klare Lanke 1950 e.V." leased.
