Karl Knoche Memorial

Here the king fell through Wilderer's hand. Forester Karl Knoche on Christmas Eve 1913.

On the afternoon of Christmas Eve 1913, Knoche met a colleague, Oskar Müller, from the Escherode Forestry Office. Müller and Knoche smoked "a little pipe" together, then parted ways. Knoche probably met some forest workers on his tour, whom he is said to have wished a happy holiday. That was the last sign of life from the district forester made of nun's wood. On his way home, Karl Knoche met his murderer. He probably discovered tracks in the snow and followed them. The trail led to a poacher. He shot the forester with a stick gun. He hit him in the neck.
The perpetrator, a cigar master from Hubenrode, was identified based on the headgear.
But he was already on the run. People searched for him for days. The perpetrator was not found and arrested until New Year's Eve in Witzenhausen. The man confessed to the crime. In Göttingen he was sentenced to death and executed.
