A small forest pond, unfortunately often almost dry even when it rains a lot.

The mystery of the Mechelse pit

One autumn evening, a peddler was following the Hessenweg near Planken Wambuis when a storm broke out and he had to look for shelter. He ended up in the dilapidated inn in Mechelen where the innkeeper 'Rooie Berend' was the owner. The peddler was shown an old hutch and fell asleep there. But the innkeeper had other plans. He killed the peddler in his sleep and stole his money. The next morning, just as the sun had risen, he buried the kramer's body in a pit deep underground. When the peddler went missing, a search was started and the body was found in the pit. The innkeeper was executed, but after his death his soul could not find rest anywhere. On stormy autumn evenings he appears as a burning figure, like a 'fireman' who wanders along the remote roads of the Veluwe. At the place where the old, neglected inn once stood, there is now a deep depression in the terrain. It is still known as the Mechelse Kuil. (source: indebuurt.nl)
