A memorial plaque erected on March 16, 2019, in Zug's Lower Old Town commemorates the forced landing of a bomber on Lake Zug during World War II. On March 16, 1944, the bomber's commander had his crew eject from the damaged aircraft after turning back in front of the Alps over Baar and made the landing on the lake alone. One of the nine crew members did not survive the jump. The aircraft, dubbed the Lonesome Polecat, was recovered from the lake in 1952, exhibited in various Swiss cities, and scrapped in St. Moritz in 1972.
