Fantastically beautiful! At least in late June, early July traffic was not a problem in the morning (before 10am) and in the evening (after 7pm).

If you want to go up without a bike, you can also take a call bus. They start in mid-June, cost 10 euros per seat, pick you up at the hotel around 9 a.m. and drive down again at 4 p.m.

Nice, very nice valley but still quite overcrowded compared to the rest of Corsica on September 13th. Anyone who walks up to the end of the road to Melo See also has hundreds of hikers around them.

Narrow, narrow street with quite a lot of traffic to the hiking car park. It's worth driving. But you have to be on guard all the time. You should expect a car in every corner, especially when going downhill.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current parking arrangements and costs in Vallée de la Restonica?

Due to storm damage in late 2023, private vehicle access is now restricted beyond Tuani. Visitors must park at designated areas before this point or in Corte. A seasonal shuttle service is the primary way to reach the upper trailheads. If you do drive part of the way, be aware that the road is narrow and winding, and parking fills up quickly, especially during peak season. One visitor noted that traffic was less problematic before 10 AM and after 7 PM in late June/early July.

How does the shuttle service to Vallée de la Restonica trailheads operate?

A seasonal shuttle service runs daily from the Corte train station, typically from May 2nd to September 28th. This service transports visitors to the hiking trailheads further into the valley, bypassing the restricted private vehicle access. One user mentioned a call bus service starting in mid-June, costing around 10 euros per seat, with pickups around 9 AM and returns at 4 PM, which might refer to this shuttle or a similar service.

Are there any permits or fees required to hike in Vallée de la Restonica?

While there are no specific hiking permits required for general access to the trails in Vallée de la Restonica, there may be fees associated with the shuttle service or parking if you choose to use those options. The valley has been a classified site since 1966, indicating its protected status, but this does not typically translate to individual hiking permits.

Are dogs allowed on the trails in Vallée de la Restonica?

The information available does not explicitly state restrictions on dogs for all trails. However, as a protected natural site, it's advisable to keep dogs on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Always check local signage upon arrival, especially for sensitive areas like the glacial lakes, as regulations can vary.

What are some good family-friendly hiking options in Vallée de la Restonica?

The valley offers a variety of trails, including easier walks suitable for families. While the popular routes to Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello involve some elevation gain and can be challenging for very young children, the initial sections along the river or the newly created "voie verte" (greenway) from Tuani to Tragone offer gentler terrain. Look for trails marked as "easy" among the over 30 km of new and renovated paths.

Where are the best spots for wild swimming in Vallée de la Restonica, and is the water warm enough?

The Restonica river is famous for its numerous natural granite pools and waterfalls, which are inviting spots for wild swimming. You'll find many opportunities along the river as you venture into the valley. However, be prepared: the water remains quite cold even in summer, as it originates from high mountain sources. Always exercise caution and check water levels before entering.

Are there cafes or restaurants directly within Vallée de la Restonica?

While the valley is primarily a natural site, there are typically small establishments like the Bergeries de Grotelle at the end of the accessible road, which might offer refreshments or simple meals during peak season. For a wider selection of cafes and restaurants, the nearby town of Corte, just a short distance from the valley entrance, provides ample choices.

What kind of accommodation is available near Vallée de la Restonica?

The closest and most convenient accommodation options are found in the historic town of Corte. Here you can find hotels, guesthouses, and apartments catering to various budgets. There may also be campsites or rural gîtes (holiday rentals) in the surrounding areas, offering a more immersive experience in the Corsican countryside.

Is Vallée de la Restonica suitable for visiting in winter or during shoulder seasons?

While late spring through early autumn is generally recommended for hiking, visiting in the shoulder seasons (early spring, late autumn) can offer a quieter experience, though some facilities like the shuttle service might not be operational. Winter visits are possible but require appropriate gear and experience, as higher elevations, including Lac de Capitello, can remain frozen for over eight months a year, and trails may be snow-covered or icy. Always check weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out.

How crowded does Vallée de la Restonica get, especially on weekends or during peak season?

Vallée de la Restonica is a very popular destination, and it can get quite crowded, especially during the summer months and on weekends. One visitor noted that even in mid-September, it was "quite overcrowded compared to the rest of Corsica," with hundreds of hikers on the way to Lac de Melo. To avoid the busiest times, it's highly recommended to arrive early in the morning or visit later in the afternoon.

What are the typical round-trip hiking times for Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello?

The hike to Lac de Melo typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours one-way from the Bergeries de Grotelle. Continuing from Lac de Melo to Lac de Capitello adds another hour of more strenuous climbing. Therefore, a round trip to Lac de Melo would be approximately 3-4 hours, and a round trip encompassing both lakes could take 5-6 hours or more, depending on your pace and time spent enjoying the views.
