The Catholic parish church in Gabsheim is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Rheinhessen. Its dominant position above the village makes it a landmark for the entire surrounding area.

This Gothic church, located on the edge of the village and appearing unified from the outside, surprises with its magnificent interior. The single-nave nave, built around 1490, was converted into a hall between 1510 and 1518. The relatively short space, divided by four pillars and consisting of three naves of equal height, is spanned by an ingenious net vault: Ribs that begin high and end abruptly create the impression of an endless vault. The design for this spacious, elegant space on a very small floor plan probably originated from the Meisenheim Ironworks, probably by Philipp von Gmรผnd himself.

A visit to this much too little-known church offers art lovers many surprises. Of particular note are the three Gothic tracery windows in the choir, created in 1971 by the renowned stained-glass artist Heinrich Hindorf. The stained-glass panels depict scenes from the history of salvation from the Old and New Testaments.

The church is closed outside of service times. Visits and guided tours can be arranged through the Saulheim Catholic Parish Office. Source: rheinhessen.de

During my visit in December 2020, I was able to view and photograph the church's entrance area and the interior through the glass doors.

The late Gothic hall church of St. Alban stands on the formerly fortified cemetery. There are numerous old tombstones outside. Also worth seeing are various grave slabs of the noble families who were once wealthy here, including the winters of Rรผdesheim and especially the knight family Bube von Geispitzheim and Fetzer von Geispitzheim, on the outside of the parish church. (The place was called "Geispisheim" in the Middle Ages.)

The Catholic Church of Gabsheim, dedicated to Saint Alban, stands slightly elevated on the edge of the village, which lies in a long valley. It is a late Gothic hall church with a high, pointed tower and a choir that is slightly raised compared to the nave. Both have different construction times, the choir around 1400, the nave around 1509. The art historian Friedhelm Wilhelm Fischer comments on the interior of the Gabsheim church in his book "Late Gothic Church Architecture on the Middle Rhine" (Heidelberg 1962) as follows: "The small hall in Gabsheim conveys the impression of intimacy at the same time as that of spaciousness. This attractive contradiction and the excellent quality of the stone carvings make it one of the most beautiful church rooms on the Middle Rhine.
