The mill is a drive-through Dutchman with a half-sided wall and half-sided gallery.

      Story:
The mill was built in 1850 by the Colon couple Johann Friedrich and Anna Margaretha Lindemann, née Arnhölter, from mighty rubble stones from the neighboring quarries. In 1961 the blades were damaged by a storm and the mill brought to a standstill. In the meantime, the association "Vom Korn zum Brot", which maintains a mill yard with a water mill in Löhne-Wittel, took over the mill in 1985 and renovated it. Unfortunately, a few years later, water penetrated again, causing serious damage. In September 2004, the former mayor of the city of Vlotho, Ulrich Sturhahn, founded the association “Windmühle Exter e.V.” founded in order to preserve the monument, which is unique in this region.
After 4 years of extensive and lasting renovation work, the majestic windmill, 200m high on the Steinegger Berg, offers the viewer an impressive sight. The landscape-defining technical cultural monument is not only visually an "eye-catcher", but the full operational readiness and ability to grind grain again, surprises not only the large number of visitors, but also the experts. This makes the Lindemannsche Windmühle from 1850 the only fully functional windmill not only in the city of Vlotho but also in the Herford district!

      Technology:
It is a cap windmill (Dutch mill). An earth wall on the mountain side and a wooden gallery on the valley side serve as a working platform for the operator; this is a great feature. In the past, the cap had to be turned by hand. Later the cap was automatically turned in the direction of the wind by the wind rose. The wings are provided with flaps that can be opened or closed by a pulling device. The mill has two grinding stages, one for grinding (grain feed) and one for rye. Both of the partially existing sack lifts have been restored and partly renewed. Two new stone cranes complete the technology on the Kornboden.
