The most famous preacher in the church was Luther's student Georg Witzel, who was born in Vacha. He met Martin Luther in Wittenberg and was one of the first to preach according to Luther's teachings in 1522. However, he lost his job in Vacha due to a marriage. After 9 years he suddenly decided to return to the Catholic faith. He soon developed from a student into one of Luther's greatest opponents. He returned to Vacha and from there wrote several works against Luther.
