The old district building on the market square in the middle of the island in Ratzeburg was built between 1726 and 1728 by the Lübeck master builder Joseph-Wilhelm Petrini. It has always served as the "authority building", albeit for different institutions over the years. This gradually included the government chancellery, the district court and, from 1882, the administration of the Duchy of Lauenburg district. In essence, this is still the case today, but the majority of today's district administration moved into the newly constructed building in Barlachstrasse in Ratzeburg in 1982. Since then, the local rooms have been used in different ways; at the moment, in addition to the district archive, the district music school, some areas of the district administration, the district president and the parliamentary groups for the parties represented in the district council are housed.
