Pikeawassa (Steel Knotts summit)

Pikeawassa (Steel Knotts summit)

Hiking

4.9

(65)

In stark contrast to the gradual slopes that rise behind it, Steel Knotts is a bristling, craggy and compact ridgeline that rises at the confluence of several picturesque dales in the Eastern Lake District. The ridge is a glorious place to explore, with stupendous views of classic Lakeland scenery, from Herdwick sheep pastures and green slopes populated by deer, to distant mountains and the sparkling Ullswater.

    Hiking

The tor of rock protruding from Steel Knotts (known as Pikeawassa) is the Wainwright summit of this Lake District fell. The views to Ullswater in one direction and down the valley towards the Nab in the other are outstanding. Alfred Wainwright wrote 'Steel Knotts may well claim to have the sharpest summit in Lakeland, for the rock tor (Pikeawassa) that crowns the top is so acute that only very agile walkers will be able to stand upon it.' I would argue that the Howitzer of Helm Crag rivals this one though.
