Loadpot Hill is a broad, windswept upland in the northwest of the Lake District National Park. Heading north, it is the final fell of substantial height in Wainwright’s Far Eastern Fells and, despite its rather flat summit robbing any view of immediate impact, it is a glorious vantage for gazing more distantly across the fells around Ullswater and towards the Helvellyn range.

Approaches to Loadpot Hill usually begin from either Howtown to the west, Pooley Bridge to the north or from Bampton, Helton or Askham in the east. Start points can be reached by boat via the Ullswater Steamers from Pooley Bridge or Glenridding, both of which have plenty of accommodation.

Loadpot Hill’s broad flanks are a good place to spot members of the Martindale red deer herd, the oldest such herd in England. Their population continues to expand across the Far Eastern Fells and their territory stretches as far as Shap to the east.

Tips

  • Loadpot Hill is a 2,205-foot (672 m) Wainwright fell in the Lake District National Park. The summit is a broad, grassy plateau and there is a trig point present. The Wainwright summit of the fell does not appear to be the trig pillar itself though so purist Wainwright baggers will have to walk 260 feet (80 m) SW of the trig point to find that. The majority of people however will tap the trig pillar, admire the views and continue along the ridge to Wether Hill.

  • Not much in the way of views here, helvellyn range continues to dominate the distance

  • The true Wainwright summit is not the trig pillar itself. Locate the highest point of land South West of the trig if you’re a purist doing the Wainwrights
