You are now standing at a former chalk quarry (marl pit) on the edge of the Onderste bosch. The quarry wall, approximately 25 metres high, consists of soft, fine-grained limestone from the Late Cretaceous. In fact, a tropical seabed from 73-69 million years ago. The structure of our country is visible here.
The nature research of Eli Heimans (1861-1914) is fascinating.
Early last century he described this groove in the magazine 'De Levende Natuur' and in his book 'Uit ons Krijtland'. Eli Heimans was one of the founders of Dutch nature conservation.
