The Albert Canal has been connecting Liège with Antwerp since 1939 and runs via Genk, Hasselt, Geel and Herentals, and the Maas with the Scheldt. In Flanders, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv manages the canal, in Wallonia the Service public de Wallonie (SPW). The canal takes its name from King Albert I and runs through three provinces, namely Liège, Limburg and Antwerp. The canal plays an important role in Flanders for inland shipping and drinking water production.
