Gearrannan Blackhouse Village

These beautiful stone cottages with thatched roofs date back to the end of the 19th century, although people have lived in the area since the Iron Age. The inhabitants of the village had to go far to make a living, travelling as far as South Georgia for the whaling season.

Over the 20th century, the cottages slowly modernised: running water and heating arrived. In 1970s, all the residents moved to more modern accommodation leaving the blackhosues derelict.

Today, the village has a shop and cafe and self-catering accommodation in the cottages. There is also a museum where you can experience what life would have been like in the cottages in days gone by.

Small open-air museum of nine Blackhouses, the traditional house type of the Highlands of Scotland. Walking through the village down to the beach costs you nothing.
There is also a small cafe.

It is worthwhile to make a short hike on the coastal path!
