The Mantova al Vioz refuge is located at 3,535 meters above sea level. From here starts the ridge that leads to the mountain of the same name. It was built between 1909 and 1911 and during the First World War it was used as a military base. The shelter has 57 beds.
Near the reception structure there is also a small brick church.

Mantova del Vioz refuge, the highest of the Eastern Alps, is located at 3.535 mt very close to the top of the Monte Vioz, a 3.645 mt mountain located on the border between Lombardy and Trentino in the wonderful and magnificent Ortler Alps.
From the top 360° of the highest mountains of Ortles-Cevedale (almost 4.000 mt tops), Bernina (one of the 4 Italian over 4.000), Brenta, Presanella, Adamello groups, and many of the Austrian and Alto Adige groups.
The most popular climbing route is from the trailhead at Peio Fonti, a cable car to the refuge Doss dei Cembri, and a 1.350 metre climb from there or the shirter, but steeper way from Peio 3000 station (only 700 mt).

The Rufugio was already closed at the end of September despite the best summit weather. Danger! There is no winter room here!
This should be taken into account by everyone who, like me, comes up completely on foot when the cable car is also closed.
The location and the view to the south are a dream.
