The town hall, built in 1737-38 by the French architect Michel Leveilly, for which the Elector Clemens August personally laid the foundation stone, closes the triangular market place to the east. The elegant outside staircase of the late baroque building was the scene of many historical events. In 1848 Gottfried Kinkel waved the black, red and gold flag here. In the 42-year history of the federal capital, every state person or crowned regent who visited Bonn on an official mission has entered the Golden Book in the Old Town Hall. In recent years, more and more representatives of international organizations have visited the town hall of the German UN city of Bonn.
