The Great Wall of Tod” this massive retaining wall holds the railway out of the canal using approximately 4 million blue bricks. As if that isn’t impressive enough the wall had to be constructed after the canal was built!

The Great Wall of Todmorden. This wall was built alongside the Rochdale canal to establish a stable embankment to carry the Leeds to Manchester railway line above the canal and through the Calder Valley. It would appear that the wall was made higher at one time with different coloured bricks and then topped off with stone slabs which this view shows to be quite large. Todmorden is a town on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire in the Pennine hills of northern England.
