The climb from the Shepherd's rest to the top of Rake End is challenging in all weathers, steep in places and very rewarding to get to the top of without putting your foot down. Like so many of the trails around here, it's an old pre-industrial pack-horse trail, made when the bottom of the valley was extremely boggy and the easiest way of getting things to the settlements was up and over the tops of the hills.

It can be breezy at the top. Hard ascent but what a descent. Returned to car via canal. A lovely stretch with lots to see.
