    History of Zuoz
Zuoz is mentioned in documents as early as the beginning of the 9th century. At that time, another small settlement had existed for a long time - more precisely: since the Bronze Age - on the Chastlatsch hill above today's Hotel Castell, as excavations have shown. Zuoz's royal Suste (goods transhipment point for mules) from the time of Louis the Pious may have stood on the site of today's "Crusch Alva" hotel. Like all Susten in the area, it points to the importance of the old transalpine north-south connection via the Julier and Maloja Passes and their branching into the Vintschgau.
Some had emigrated as tradesmen and came home wealthy, others - usually members of noble families - served foreign princes or held high offices in Valtellina and returned even wealthier. We still come across the names of these influential families in many contexts, e.g. B. Planta, Travers, Juvalta or Jecklin Schucan. An important part of the cultural heritage was contributed to the history of Zuoz by the co-founder of the Romansh written language, Gian Travers, who also initiated the Reformation in the village in 1552.
In 1499 Zuoz burned down completely. Carelessness was not the cause of the fire, no, the residents themselves had set fire to their houses in order to leave only scorched earth behind for the approaching Austrian imperial army. Since then, peace has reigned in the region and Zuoz soon flourished with the impressive buildings we know and admire today.

Nice place in the Upper Engadin with the Rhaetian Railway station.
