The 1837 ice house measures 80 cubic meters and was made of brick. The cellar was built in the Royal Park and is actually the predecessor of today's refrigerator. During the winter, the military cleared the ice that could be found in the fens and canals in the vicinity of the camp and then stored it in the ice cellar. The ice was used both in the old military hospital to treat swelling and to reduce fever and in the kitchen of the king's palace. The ice house was covered under a sand hill. A pavilion was built on that hill that served as a viewing point. However, little remains of this pavilion. The ice house is not open to the public. The cold and damp conditions in this cellar are ideal as a hibernation place for bats. They make eager use of this.
