A well-preserved fortress where construction started in 1908. At the outbreak of WW1 in 1914, the fort was not yet finished.
Fort nevertheless played an important role in the withdrawal of the Belgian army. Smoke grenades ensured that trains, horses, carts and foot soldiers were hidden from the enemy's eye. Now it is a museum. Departure point of many cycling and walking routes

just a note to Herwig's message, the fort of Liezele is no longer original, the artillery fort was converted with machine-gun nests instead of cannons. The only fort of this kind that is still completely original and in its original state is that of Haasdonk. (The cell doors were removed there to use in the museum fort of Liezele. ) Unfortunately, it is now privately owned and cannot be visited. , although a walk around the fort moat is still worthwhile.
