The parts of the building were designed by Richard Riemerschmid in 1907 and, as a whole, trace the outline of a screw clamp.

The factory complex of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau (DWH) cannot be overlooked. Built in the form of a screw clamp, series production of the popular machine furniture began in 1910. Since the reprivatisation in 1992, innovative companies have settled in the Hellerau building ensemble. Many technologists, scientists, architects and artists work and live on the site. The charming inner courtyard and representative conference and event rooms are popular. The warehouse and delivery house converted into a restaurant called Schmidt's, the Bruno-Paul-Haus in the style of the former chip bunker or the new studio buildings reflect a unique architecture. Colin Ardley's sculpture “genius loci”, four and a half tons made of steel and aluminum, forms a bridge between the buildings. DWH itself has been producing exclusively designed building and ship equipment in the new building opposite since 2006. In Dresden, the DWH equipped inter alia. the Semperoper (1985), the Saxon State Parliament (1994) and the New Synagogue (2001).

Hellerau workshops were and are a reform project for good furniture. Houses comparable to Margarethenhöhe in Essen were built for the workers. You can live wonderfully here. Events are taking place again in the Hellerau stages
