These stairs, with way too many steps leading to the church - it's beautiful!

The covered pilgrimage staircase Mariahilf (also known colloquially as the ladder to heaven) leads over 321 steps from the Neutorgraben in the Innstadt district of Passau up into the courtyard of the Mariahilf monastery and to the pilgrimage church there. The actual pilgrimage staircase has 190 steps. There are numerous votive tablets on the walls.

The first, already covered pilgrimage staircase was built between 1627 and 1628, together with the construction of the pilgrimage church. It can be seen in a copper engraving from 1628 and began at the monastery church of the Capuchin monastery. Parallel to the actual pilgrimage staircase, the monks' entrance to the pilgrimage church ran to the east. After the city fire of 1662, it was immediately restored.

During the course of secularization, a large part of the votive tablets were lost. Bishop Heinrich von Hofstätter had the pilgrimage staircase repaired between 1862 and 1864. Hauzenberg granite replaced the wooden steps and the gable roof made of wooden shingles was replaced by a slate roof. Today the pilgrimage staircase has a metal roof.

In the first half of 2017, the staircase was extensively renovated for around 180,000 euros.
