      The "Rubnerstein"

At the edge of the forest in the northwest of Rathsberg there is a memorial stone carved from sandstone.

It commemorates a duel that took place after Pentecost, on June 1, 1841 at 6 a.m., between the student Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Rubner (Corps Baruthia, born April 12, 1821) and the theology student Karl Ludwig Thuerecht Köberlin (Burschenschaft Bubenruthia, 1821–1896). The reason for this duel was a fierce argument at the Erlangen Bergkirchweih. Shortly after the duel began, Rubner was fatally hit in the chest with a rapier. The body was hidden in the bushes to keep his death secret for as long as possible. This was to enable his opponent to escape.

Two girls found the dead man on June 4, 1841. Forensic investigations did not provide any clarification. Rubner's body was buried on June 5, 1841, with all students in attendance, but quietly and without blessing, in the Neustadt cemetery.

Before 1900, Rubner's fraternity, Corps Baruthia, erected a memorial stone on the land it had purchased for itself, which was renewed in 1928. The memorial stone shows the fraternity's circle, a sword, Rubner's name and the date of his death.

As far as is known, Rubner's duelling opponent Köberlin was last headmaster at a trade school in Schweinfurt and died of natural causes in 1896.
