Huge amounts of water are pumped into the dunes via the Kwal. The water comes from the IJsselmeer and is transported to the dunes via a pipe of up to 52 kilometers long. Here in the dunes, the water is purified, after which it returns to civilization: the well-known pure Dutch tap water.

Water is supplied from the Lekkanaal near Nieuwegein, and via the water inlet - popularly called De Kwal - and then the infiltration channels are spread throughout the area. It then sinks into the bottom to be pumped up again a few weeks later. A small amount comes via Andijk, but most of it goes directly to the water factory to be demineralized (softened), only the "surplus" goes via De Kwal.
