At shallow depths (10-20 meters) there is an almost impermeable layer on the Peelhorst. This is the Breda Formation, which was deposited in a kind of coastal location in the Miocene. This formation consists of strong clay material (more or less comparable to younger marine clay) or fine sandy material and is therefore difficult for water to penetrate. This prevents rainwater in the area from penetrating deep into the ground.
