The medieval city wall Kalkars was occupied until the end of the 16th century with about 16 towers. Only one remnant of the former town fortification has remained, and the pigeon tower, today up to the height of 4 m still in its original condition, is the only surviving round tower.

The pigeon tower offers an interesting story. Built in 1446, it initially served as a prison tower. That is why people used to call it “Düven-Törm” (Thief Tower). By shifting the sound in Low German, the Duventurm, i.e. pigeon tower, developed from this over time.
The tower then served as a studio for the Kalkar artists Gerhard Janssen, Hermann Teuber and Heinrich Nauen.
