The chapel was built after the end of the Second World War in honor of Mary, the help of Christians and in honor of the holy guardian angels, as a thank you for the intactness of the town of Denkendorf and its inhabitants during the war. The village was on the edge of the Allied bombers' main approach path, but was spared several times. On November 22, 1944, 20 heavy explosive bombs fell nearby. On December 17, a British plane laden with phosphorus bombs also crashed near the village. Fortunately, no one in the village was harmed in either case. Contrary to official instructions, the fallen soldiers of the British plane were buried with dignity in the village cemetery, which is why the place was spared during the liberation by the Americans. In 1947/48, the parish of Degerndorf built the chapel in its most beautiful place, the Fürstenberg, as a thank you and souvenir.
A beautiful circular hike, which also works great with prams, leads to this beautiful place: mamameilen.de/maria-dank-kapelle-degerndorf

The chapel stands on the Fürstenberg, the highest hill at 718m with a magnificent view in all directions. It is also the location for the series Hubert and Staller, including the episode "Too good for this world"
