The Cecilie mine was put into operation in 1907. In 1908 a briquette factory went into operation. The mine gained international importance due to its fossil finds, which came to light as early as 1908-1912 with the coal mining. From 1925 the excavations of finds are systematically carried out by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
