    "Cyberneticist by Anatol Herzfeld
The cyberneticians embark on a journey to measure the world. They all carry a stick exactly one meter long in their hand as a reference for their task. They are in the immediate vicinity of the GEOMAR library to demonstrate that they have read the literature that has been available on this question so far and are therefore well prepared. So you are prepared for the things that you will encounter on your journey and have the necessary utensils with you, also expressed in the suitcase you are carrying. Therefore, to a certain extent, they can start "sheltered" (everyone wears a hat!). You look out towards the sea (not quite) to embark on a sea expedition from here. (Freely based on the words of the artist at the inauguration in 1996).
Anatol Herzfeld was born in Insterburg in East Prussia in 1931. 1964 - 1972 he studied with Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, then until
1974 architecture with Karl Wimmernauer. In 1975, with Beuys' support, he founded the "Freie Akademie Oldenburg". Since the early 1980s, the deeply religious Herzfeld has lived and worked on the Museum Island Hombroich near Neuss, where he created a "church* out of boulders that was consecrated in 1989. He works as a sculptor , painter and graphic artist.

Are they researchers standing there in a group in front of the Ocean Research Center?
With a top hat well protected, a suitcase in one hand and a staff exactly one meter long in the other, they at least seem very thirsty for knowledge and action. Perhaps they are about to set off to measure the world? In any case, they have already set their sights on the sea
(or at least the mouth of the Schwentine).

Sculptor Anatol Herzfeld constructed twelve figures in geometric shapes from rust-red steel. They are very static bodies in square and round shapes that are reminiscent of robots. They stand upright on a pedestal, their legs close together, their arms close to their bodies. All the figures have the same, anonymous shape and radiate rigor and order. They stand close together in a group, but do not come into contact with one another; instead, they all look in the same direction and remain on their own. The arrangement of the figures breaks the geometric rigor, as it does not follow a grid, but is slightly offset. All figures continue to maintain a reasonable distance.

Each figure exudes a busy seriousness, entirely devoted to the purpose of the task. However, the uniform repetition and the grouping without contact with each other make the eager cyberneticists seem rather comical.

As a viewer, you want to break away from the anonymity of the masses and go your own way. Above all, you want to be more human than these machine-like beings.

Does anyone know the movie "Toys" with Robin Williams? Somehow this work of art makes you feel as if you were in the film. 😉

"The rusty cyberneticists in front of the GEOMAR set out on a journey to measure the world" and carry a 1-meter ruler, a suitcase and a cylinder. In the artist's imagination, women can't handle the folding rule?🤔
