The Hermit Trail was once the portal to a luxury camp within the Grand Canyon and looking back way further in time, around 1100 AD, Hermit Canyon was used by ancestral Puebloan people. They were hunting and gathering within the Hermit area and even did some farming close to Hermit Creek. Later on, when mining became popular in the canyon during the 1880s, the ideas of building the trail emerged. In 1912, it was constructed for the Santa Fe Railway and was considered to be the finest trail into the Grand Canyon at that time. It lead from Hermits Rest down to Hermit Camp, a luxury camp consisting of tents.

Today, the Hermit Trail is a beautiful trail that offers much more solitude than the corridor trails and leads to relics of the past.
