At a time when the Bright Angel Trail was privately owned and thus subject to tariffs, the Santa Fe Railway Company built the Hermit Trail. It also built a luxury camp in Hermit Basin, which was abandoned when the Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab Trail were de-privatized. Today, numerous clues such as walls, broken glass and a small cellar can still be found at this site.
